Kaiba walked off the train. His visit to Bethel Alaska wasn’t going to last long, he thought. It was the middle of summer, and he really didn’t want to be here.

Last week his old girlfriend called. She had said she was really upset, and needed someone. Kaiba planned to visit her for a little while, a few weeks at most, make sure she was ok, and then leave. He broke up with her to go to college in Moscow Idaho. He thought it was a good idea at the time. At the time, Kaiba never realized Anya cared so much for him. Maybe it had been a mistake.

He pulled out his phone to call Anya. She was going to pick him up. He guessed that didn’t work out for her because he waited for an hour and she never came. Maybe I’ll stop to get food, then a flower store to get her a rose…

The crowded air port made it impossible to find anything. Down the street he found an old diner. This is perfect. I can get in and out quick. She won’t think anything of it, I won’t be too late.
Inside the diner door was a strange man. But this diner was in an ally, a not very visited place, and around this area there were many tourists… Kaiba walked to the nearest booth. A waitress in roller skates and a short red and white striped skirt rolled up to him. He was so oblivious to the beautiful woman. He had too many things on his mind. Waitress: “hello sir, may I take your order?” though her voice was high and trilling, he still didn’t notice. Kaiba: “I’ll just take a cheeseburger and an orange soda. Extra cheese. Thanks.” Kaiba smiled at her politely. She blushed and hurried away. He had been told before he was beautiful but he assumed it had been a joke. That would explain the staring faces ever where he went. How didn’t I notice that before?

The strange man never left. Though it took a while for his food to come, he stranger never left. He never ate. Actually, he never moved. For a while Kaiba considered that he was a statue. Or maybe it was a joke. Again.

Kaiba thought about walking to the flower shop, but it was a long way to walk. In his nice outfit, and suitcase, he decided against it. In only two minutes, a taxi pulled up to the side walk. Driver: “where too?” Kaiba: “the flower shop, it’s about 30 blocks from here.” Driver: “yeah, yeah I know the place. My wife loves their flowers. I have to buy them for her all the time… for about every occasion. Do you have a special someone to buy flowers for?” He asked it, but it wasn’t a question. Kaiba: “just an old friend. ‘m only visiting and I thought it would be polite to give my hostis a gift.” Driver: “well that’s thoughtful.” Kaiba only nodded.

As Kaiba got out of the car he noticed a stranger in the ally. Who is he? It wasn’t usual to find people creeping. I have to walk five blocks, what should I do? Maybe I shouldn’t have stopped to get flowers… was it safe? Should I get back in the taxi? But then tell the driver what? I changed my mind? I didn’t realize I had little cash? But I do have a ton of cash in my pocket… it bulges out… he would notice… He kept walking, ignoring the strange man dressed in black.

The wind picked up and clouds moved over the small town. Kaiba’s long black hair flew around his face. Before he even got to the side of the store, the man started walking towards him.
